Lishia Erza has been actively involved in areas of international development and democratic governance since 1999 when she joined UNESCO's ASP-network as Peace Education trainer for teenagers. Since then, together with UNDP and Asian Development Bank she has held a number of roles working with executive and legislative offices in Indonesia. Awarded various recognitions throughout her career, one of her most recent is the prestigious Chevening scholarship awarded by the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 2009. The Chevening has had substantial reputation for selecting future leaders and includes many eminent people among its alumni in the world.

In 2010, Queen Margaret University awarded her a PhD bursary to do research in areas of democratic governance and social exclusion as social determinant of health. Lishia’s PhD is titled: "Democratic Governance and Social Exclusion: Case Study Mentawai in decentralised Indonesia".

This research is examining ways in which democracy leads indigenous communities to and away from social exclusion.
